SENIOR SCHOOL

Junior School

One of our prime aims at Grittleton House is to teach our pupils to become organised, independent children who are actively involved in their own learning.  As pupils move into the Junior Department in Year 3 we build on the foundations firmly established in the Reception and Infant classes.

Pupils are mainly taught by their form teachers, in small classes, but all lessons now become subject-based.  Continuity and progression of teaching and learning throughout the school are ensured by whole school Maths, Spelling and Handwriting programmes and carefully-planned schemes of work in other subjects.

All our pupils belong to one of three houses and are encouraged to earn credits for themselves and their houses.  Credits are awarded not just for academic excellence but also for endeavour, courteous acts and thoughtfulness and kindness shown towards their peers and teachers.

The proprietors of Grittleton House are constantly trying to improve the facilities that can be offered to our pupils.  In the last two years, a new I.C.T. suite and Art room have been opened.

As pupils move through the Junior School, they are encouraged to further develop their organisational skills and to take on more responsibilities to ensure the smooth running of the school.  Year 5 pupils currently look after our playground equipment and Year 6 ensure that our younger pupils are escorted back safely to their classrooms at the end of each break-time.  We have high expectations of our pupils and we aim to positively reinforce good behaviour. This ensures that when our pupils reach the end of their time in the Junior department, they are able to move on confidently   to the senior school of their choice, having adopted the school’s ethos and values as their own.
